Khalida Brohi is a strong Pakistani woman who is working to stop honor killings by empowering women and making them a needed economic support system in households. At the age of 16 she received news that her friend had been murdered in an honor killing. An Honor killing is the murder of a family member done by a male in the house when the victim is suspected of bringing shame upon the family. Upon receiving the news she decided she would no longer cry in her pillow anymore and that she would actually do something. Brohi started protesting and soon got a large following. Although her and her team thought they were doing great they were met with counter protesters who said her team was trying to stop their tribal beliefs. Her team then came up with the idea of letting the women work in a quilt factory which would earn their family money and also give them an education. Men started realizing that their wives started making decisions more so they stopped letting their wives go. Brohis team then created a fashion brand that could employ more women and allow them to make even more money so that their husbands could not say no to the offer. After working for seven years she has employed 900 women and by the end of the next 10 years she hopes to employ 1 million women. This talk can relate to William Zinsser’s “The Right to Fail” because in his article he wrote how the American Dream is not making money but rather helping others to newer generations. He explained that millennials are starting to not care as much about what their job is but are being more interested in how they can help others. Many millennials can only dream of helping as many people as Brohi has but thats why its called the American dream. Although Brohi is not American many of her values are the same, such as helping others and equality. As newer generations get to the adult point of their life they are choosing the American Dream that doesn't fill the bank but fills their hearts. Her speech fits perfectly into the global of dream of education and equality because that is what she has worked for her whole life. I loved this speech because what was done to help these women is only something I can dream of doing. One of my goals in life is to travel and help women affected by human trafficking and inequality. I think what Khalida Brohi did deserves all of the praise in the world because standing up for what you believe in as a woman in an unequal society is very hard. Not only has she saved lives but she provided an outlet for women where they know they are safe. These women were given the opportunity of education and earning money in a society where this is usually very prohibited by the men in their families. This speech was very empowering and i hope is leads to more equality fights globally. Im taking away the information that if you don't like the rules in place, find a way to change them. Im also taking away that there are many ways to help women in need and that sometimes you have to be the one who steps out and does something. :
